Peter Jackson Funding Search for 'Real Killer' in West Memphis Three Murders
'Lord of the Rings' director Peter Jackson isn't just interested in vanquishing evil on the big screen: He also wants to find the real killer in the still unsolved West Memphis Three case. Even though the trio has been released from prison, Jackson (who also directed 'The Lovely Bones') will continue to fund the effort to clear their names and find the real murderer of three small boys, EW reports. Jackson may not have been as vocal a supporter of the West Memphis Three as, say, Johnny Depp, but for the past several years, he's quietly funded private investigations and forensic experts in an effort to overturn their 1994 convictions. Jason Baldwin, Jessie Misskelley Jr., and Damien Echols were freed on August 19, but are technically still considered guilty. "The ongoing work will focus on proving the convicted men's innocence, as it always has," Jackson's manager, Ken Kamins told EW. He added that Jackson and his partner Fran Walsh hope their efforts will "lead to the unmasking of the actual killer." The case was the subject of the award-winning 1996 HBO documentary 'Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills,' and celebrities including Depp, Eddie Vedder, Natalie Maines, and Henry Rollins rallied to support the teens whom they believed to be wrongly convicted. "When Peter and Fran got involved, they had to decide how to best serve the case," Kamins told EW. "Everyone else who was raising money and bringing public attention to the case. Peter and Fran, therefore, decided to put their attention into funding and spearheading DNA work, hiring forensic and other experts, plus extensive private investigations into all aspects of the case." Kamins continued: "Because Peter and Fran's role required a very close relationship with the defense lawyers, in particular Damien's team, they have always respected and understood that their role had to be of a confidential nature." He added that over the years, Jackson has become close friends with Damien and his wife Lorri. "They have always believed that if they could get Damien free, Jason and Jessie would benefit too." Now all three are free, but the filmmakers don't consider their work over. "Peter and Fran are heavily involved in ongoing investigations, and the release of the guys is far from the end of the story." The ultimate large question? If the world will still embrace Austin. Possibly time away may have been great for his comic mojo...

Andy Serkis: 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' Deserves Oscar Nomination
Courtesy of Weta Andy Serkis, who plays the apes in Rise in the Planet of the Apes, thinks the Academy is overlooking actors who work in motion-capture suits. "I am a bit evangelical, I know, but performance-capture is still misunderstood," he tells the UK Daily Guardian. "Ten years down the line, people say, 'Oh, so you did the voice of Gollum?' Or people go, 'You did the movements for [King]Kong?' It's frustrating, because I play Gollum and I play [King] Kong. It is acting." PHOTOS: 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' First Look: The Many Faces of Andy Serkis "The emotional content of these performances live and die by what the actors bring to the roles on set. I never approach a live-action role any differently to a performance-captured role. The process of acting is absolutely identical," he added in a second interview with the BBC. "It should be recognized that there are two parts to the process. The first part is capturing the performance. Only later down the line do you start seeing the characters being painted over frame by frame using pixels," he said. Rise of the Planet of the Apes: Film Review Serkis does not think a special category should be created at the Oscars. "Performance-capture technology is really the only way that we could bring these characters to life," he said. "It's the way that Gollum was brought to life, and King Kong, and the Na'vi in Avatar and so on and it's really another way of capturing an actor's performance. That's all it is, digital make-up." Rise of the Planet of the Apes may still come in at No. 1 at the weekend box office. It's up against The Help, Destination 5, Glee: The 3D Concert Movie and 30 Minutes or Less. Eddie Murphy Will Voice Hong Kong Phooey
He wants to be the number one super guyYou might think that Eddie Murphy would be able to retire from performing animated characters for life off the money he made giving voice to Shrek's Donkey. But he's clearly happy to step back into the booth for another run, signing on to voice Hong Kong Phooey. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your feelings towards other films using the technique), this will not be a simple 'toon, but instead work as a live-action/animated hybrid like (shudder) the Chipmunks outings and (double shudder) Yogi Bear. The basic plot, for those too young to remember the '70s series or who have never seen repeats, finds regular dog Penry stumbling into a mystical ceremony and being granted the power to walk upright and speak, plus a handy set of kung fu skills that are honed by a master. He forges a career as a superhero, hiding behind the guise of a humble, stumbling janitor. Oh, and he has a snarky sidekick cat, Spot. "We could not be happier that Eddie Murphy will star as Phooey," Alcon Entertainment's Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove said in a statement picked up by Deadline. "There is no overstating his contributions to cinema, and to such enduring stars of family entertainments such as Shrek and Dr. Doolittle. We look forward to watching him re-imagine yet another classic character. "Alex Zamm, whose work has thus far been mostly relegated to straight-to-video sequels, is graduating to the big screen for the film.

Lars Von Trier Upset That Norway's Mass Murderer Loved Dogville
“I feel badly about thinking that Dogville, which in my eyes is one of my most successful films, should have been a kind of script for him. It’s horrific,” director Lars von Trier said about the fact that Dogville was revealed to be one of Norwegian camp killer Anders Behring Breivik’s favorite films. “[I]f it was an inspiration, I’m sorry that I made it. But of course I have educational purposes with my films, even if I hesitate to admit it, and my views are the complete opposite of Breivik and his deeds.” Dogville ends with Nicole Kidman’s character ordering the massacre of the village that abused her.
